Crocheting or knitting brings us many benefits that we sometimes forget or end up underestimating. There are various testimonies of people who have found benefit from this activity, "Chrochet Therapy" or Crochet Therapy. It helps the mind, stimulating creativity and cognitive skills, and helps ourselves find satisfaction in finishing a job and improving our skills more and more.
On the other hand, knitting can also cause physical pain, the most common ones being in the hands and neck. Below we will list the problems you may encounter and how to resolve them.
HANDS PAIN: How many times have you lost track of time? Unfortunately, what gives us a good jolt from our concentration can be tingling in the hands or pain in the wrist. Before feeling these signs it is always good to stop for a few minutes from our work (don't worry, it won't run away!) and massage your hands and wrist. If you also have arnica at home, so much the better!
The pangs we feel may be due to the grip: it can happen that at the beginning of a job, especially joining two yarns, the work is quite heavy and therefore, automatically, we feel like tightening our grip. Have you ever tried with the knife grip? In these cases, the posture of the hand helps a lot, making it rest from the usual grip used.
Another solution you can adopt is to use an ergonomic crochet hook, they are larger and are covered with a rubber pad made specifically to create less tension on the hand. On our website www.tricotcafe.com section Accessories > Needles and Crochet Hooks > Ergonomic Crochet Hook you will find different sizes of crochet hooks suitable for your type of work.
For those looking for comfortable grip needles, we recommend circular needles, which you can find on our website www.tricotcafe.com in the Accessories > Needles and Crochets > Short Needle Tips section.
NECK PAIN: We must be careful not to bend too much with our neck downwards, otherwise we will suffer the consequences. Here too it is advisable to take short breaks and do some exercises. The exercise that helps the most is to make circular movements: starting at the top, move your head to the right, down, then to the left and up again. Do these movements for at least 1 minute. Another exercise is to keep your back straight, swing your head forward from right to left, and back in the opposite direction, 10 times.
BACK PAIN: It is important to maintain good posture while knitting. A posture that is not too rigid, however, trying not to get tired and therefore bend our back to the right or left. Also, pay attention to how we hold our arms too, especially the elbows: keep them close to the sides. Here too, doing exercises helps a lot to relax the spine and joints.
EYE PAIN: In the late afternoon the natural light decreases and if the eye does not have good light it tends to get more tired and therefore cause burning. Look away every now and then and here too a small exercise that can help is to make circular movements with the eye. Take a short break by preparing some coffee or herbal tea to rest your whole body, even your legs!
MOVEMENT! If a walk is allowed in your region or municipality during these spring days, take advantage of it (with the right precautions of course) and enjoy the sun before risking another lockdown! Otherwise, for those who have equipment such as an exercise bike or a treadmill, it is ideal for rainy or quarantine days.
